Verify employment qualifications through the issuing institution

Submitting forged qualifications for a job can have employment and criminal consequences. A translation discrepancy or delayed recognition should not, however, be labelled forgery without checking the document and the available evidence.

  1. For employment governed by federal labour law, proven submission of forged certificates or documents is a ground for dismissal without notice. The law requires a written investigation with the worker and a reasoned written dismissal decision delivered to them.

  2. Independently verify the holder, institution, qualification and date through a reliable issuing channel. An image, apparent stamp or intermediary’s claim is insufficient assurance. For overseas qualifications, distinguish document authenticity from any separate recognition or attestation requirements.

  3. The worker should answer the specific concern with original records or clarification from the issuer. Employers should preserve correspondence and verification results; publicly accusing someone or altering a document to resolve a discrepancy can create further legal problems.

A practical next step

Check the issuer’s verification route before submitting or rejecting a qualification, and retain written records of concerns, responses and employment decisions.
