Limit a power of attorney to its purpose

A power of attorney can create significant financial and legal consequences for you. A general or special label is not enough: examine the actual powers, representative and intended use carefully before signing.

  1. Identify the task, relevant property or case, and limits of authority. Include selling, settlement, receiving funds, signing commitments or delegating to someone else only deliberately and to the extent the task requires.

  2. Confirm formalities with the receiving authority and official document provider. The Ministry of Justice offers digital powers of attorney; a document issued abroad may require attestation and a translation accepted by its recipient.

  3. Keep the final instrument and reference number, and request records of the representative's actions. If you intend to end the authority, check cancellation conditions and procedures and formally notify the representative and relevant bodies.

A practical next step

Before signing, review each power to sell, receive money or delegate separately, and remove powers unnecessary for the intended task.
