Do not treat blank signatures as a shortcut

Signing an empty sheet or an incomplete agreement can make the real bargain difficult to prove. Forgery rules cover filling signed blank paper without consent in the prescribed circumstances, but preventing the dispute remains important.

  1. Complete amounts, dates, parties, subject matter and attachments before signing. Close unused spaces and record amendments with clear approval from both parties; an assurance that agreed details will be added later is inadequate protection.

  2. Obtain an identical final copy immediately and retain its delivery and acceptance history. If another person will complete a form, define the permitted information and limits of their authority in advance in a way that can be evidenced.

  3. If misuse occurs, keep earlier and later versions, messages explaining the permission and the original instrument. Authenticity of a signature and consent to the completed wording are related but different issues requiring the appropriate evidential or challenge procedure.

A practical next step

Wait for completed wording and a final copy before signing; if you already signed in blank, document the permission and the document’s current status.
